Chapter 10: Light - Class 10 Science Notes

1. Nature of Light

Light is a form of energy that travels in space. It exhibits properties of both waves and particles.

2. Reflection of Light

Definition: Reflection is the bouncing back of light when it hits a surface.

Laws of Reflection

  • The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection: \( i = r \).
  • The incident ray, the reflected ray, and the normal at the point of incidence all lie in the same plane.

3. Spherical Mirrors

Types:

  • Concave Mirror: Curves inward and can produce real and virtual images.
  • Convex Mirror: Curves outward and only produces virtual images.

Characteristics: Concave mirrors can magnify images, while convex mirrors provide a wider field of view.

4. Image Formation by Mirrors

Ray diagrams are essential for locating images formed by concave and convex mirrors.

Characteristics of Images

  • Size (magnified or diminished)
  • Nature (real or virtual)
  • Orientation (upright or inverted)

5. Lenses

Types:

  • Convex Lens: Converges light rays to a point.
  • Concave Lens: Diverges light rays.

Lens Formula: The relationship between object distance (u), image distance (v), and focal length (f) is given by:

\[ \frac{1}{f} = \frac{1}{v} - \frac{1}{u} \]

6. Image Formation by Lenses

Similar to mirrors, lenses can form real and virtual images, and the characteristics depend on the type of lens and the position of the object.

7. Refraction of Light

Definition: Refraction is the bending of light as it passes from one medium to another.

Laws of Refraction

  • The incident ray, refracted ray, and the normal all lie in the same plane.
  • Snell's Law: \[ n_1 \sin(i) = n_2 \sin(r) \]

8. Total Internal Reflection

Occurs when light travels from a denser medium to a rarer medium and the angle of incidence exceeds the critical angle.

Applications: Used in optical fibers and prisms.

9. Dispersion of Light

The splitting of white light into its constituent colors (spectrum) when it passes through a prism.

Colors of the Spectrum: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet (ROYGBIV).

10. Applications of Light

Understanding the working of devices like microscopes, telescopes, and cameras, as well as everyday phenomena like rainbows and mirages.
